TOP 3 DENTON HAPPY HOURS

Barley & Board

When: Mon-Fri 4-6pm

What: $4 beer and wine, $5 cocktails (some exclusions apply)

Why: Barley & Board isn't a "cheap" place to eat on the reg, but there's nothing better than their happy hour. My personal favorite cocktail in all of Denton, The Opera House, is typically a $12 drink on their menu. But during happy hour, it's only $5. Which means I can get two...or three... and not feel bad about getting multiple "fancy" concoctions. Their awesome happy hour not only draws my husband and I into their doors about every other week, but here's the usual scenario: we go to happy hour to get a drink or two, end up enjoying our time there so much and not ready to leave, so we almost always end up staying for dinner and buying at least a couple apps (if not a whole meal). With a career in marketing, I see this as a genius strategy — and it baffles me that every other local restaurant / bar in Denton isn't doing the same thing. A great happy hour not only draws customers in the door more often than they normally would, but it also increases the chances they'll stay longer and keep buying food/drinks. And I have no problem being a living example of how this strategy works to bring them more business. Every. Time. They also used to offer happy hour specials on their appetizers on Thursdays but not currently offering during the pandemic.

Mellow Mushroom

When: Mon-Fri 2-7pm, Sat-Sun 12-5pm

What: Half off all appetizers (except wings) and alcohol (beer, wine, cocktails). They also have $3 Mimosas, $4 Bloody Mary's and $5.50 Sangrias on weekends.

And daily specials:

Mon: BOGO (buy one large or medium specialty pizza, get one 50% off), $3 pints
Tues: two small specialty pizzas for $22, 50% off all Texas booze
Wed: Large $10 cheese pizza + live trivia night at 6:30pm, 50% off wine bottles, $3 wells
Thur: 25% off wings (including vegan!), $3 cans
Fri: $9 top shelf RB margaritas
20% off for first responders and educators with ID
25% off for students with ID

Why: As a hyper-local blogger in Denton, I can't lie - I feel a little ashamed for putting a chain at the top 3 of my happy hour list. But to be honest, it's a good one. And the Denton location is owned by a local veteran! Any happy hour is a privilege, but there's nothing more off-putting than when a restaurant or bar offers "$1 off a specialty drink" happy hour. Okay cool?? At that point, they might as well not offer a happy hour because that's not going to drive people through the door. Alright, rant over. So what I love about Mellow Mushroom is that their drink prices are already low (even for craft beers and specialty cocktails), and then it's half off those low prices during their happy hour. I seriously think it's the cheapest happy hour in Denton that offers great deals on tons of drink options. Sure there's a few other places that offer similar deals or prices, but you might be limited to a Lone Star or bar nachos. Mellow Mushroom does have tasty food so even if you just go to get an app and a couple drinks, it'll be a cheap date night for the win!

Komodo Loco

When: Mon-Thur 4-6pm, Fri 3-6pm

What:

Half off apps

$1 sake bombs
$3 beam, western son, house wine
$3 small house sake
$5 large house sake
Mon: 1/2 off sake, $5 rolls
Tues: all night happy hour
Wed: service industry night
Thur: martini night, 1/2 off wine bottles

Why: Just look at that menu of happy hour options. I love going to Komodo Loco - for the food, the atmosphere, the proximity to the Square... but happy hour is just another reason to get your butt there right after work to enjoy their specials for a great start to the evening. We love getting their large house sake with peach flavor added. And if you're like me and tend to always order the ramen bowls every time you go and have never tried their sushi rolls, their $5 roll specials is a great reason to try something new!
